CDC develops curved scrubber box for low seam miners

| Nov/Dec. 1999 The latest addition to CDCs scrubber box range is a curved side-outlet box specially designed for low seam continuous miners. "We see this as a major innovation as it greatly adds to the application flexibility of our boxes," said MD Doug Hutson. The new style box, made in all but the two largest of CDCs five different scrubber box sizes, is designed with a side outlet so that it can be mounted on a machine where space constraints dont permit use of a conventional rear-outlet box. "With the normal high seam machine the scrubber box is mounted on top and there is nothing to obstruct the rear outlet, but on the low seam miner the curved box is mounted on the track frame and stands flush against other equipment, necessitating use of a side outlet," explained Doug. The curved unit also has less system resistance and therefore a higher volume operating point than its rear-outlet counterpart, since demisters are not required as the water droplets are discharged against the stick side and not at the shuttle car driver. CDC developed the new box in response to requests by Sasol Coals Secunda mines, all of which have been deploying them successfully on their low seam miners since the company brought them into production earlier this year. / cn610-9 |
