CDC pump shop expanded and upgraded

CDC is carrying out the third major revamp of its pump shop facility to improve and speed up the pump repair service.

The pump shop is being relocated to a part of the plant where more room will be available and which will also be for its exclusive use instead of having to be shared. "Where it is at present space is a bit tight and the pump shop has to partly share space with CDC and Air Cleaning stores," said general manager Bob Johnstone.

At 77 sq. m the new pump shop will be about double the size of its predecessor, allowing ample space for both repair and test areas. "In addition in the repair shop we are introducing a production-line type system where each stage of the work has its own dedicated area and the whole repair operation follows a logical sequence from start to finish. This will make it more efficient and faster, as well as being more convenient and hassle-free for the mechanics."

CDC’s first pump shop at Springs was a relatively primitive and cramped affair in which the cleaning of the pumps was done manually. Subsequently a chemical washing plant was installed which streamlined this procedure. Then in the subsequent revamp a computerised testing facility to measure pressures, flows and speeds was introduced.

"We’ve now reached the stage where, to consistently achieve fast turnarounds and to meet the requirements of our growing customer base, we have to upgrade the shop further," said Bob, adding that the latest revamp is due to get under way in January for completion in March.
