Without a solid education, you do not stand a chance of a good future.

These were the words spoken by three men who have just completed their Adult Based Education Training (Abet) level one examination, equivalent to Grade three.

Simon Fuela (56), John Nkoana (47), and Johan Nkosi (48), who worked as herdboys in their younger days, say they did not give schooling the slightest thought, because 'educational opportunities were very limited'.

However, the threesome were goaded and urged to do the Abet course, sponsored by Colliery Dust Control in Nuffield, and have not looked back since.

They attend lessons at their workplace on a Tuesday and again on a Saturday in Benoni. While many shirk at the mere mention of 'homework' the men say they undertake all their assignments with enthusiasm and resourcefulness.

Fuela admits that he was closed to the idea of schooling when he was growing up, but his four children have been an inspiration to him. They even help him with his homework.

Nkoana and Nkosi grew up on different farms in Daveyton and spent their days herding goats, sheep and cattle. They never thought about school because 'you follow in the footsteps of your father'.

After spending years at Colliery Dust Control, where they strip and quote all pump repairs, the company saw the need to help them improve their communication and counting skills.

The men were referred to the Training Professionals, who have given them the skills and knowledge needed to feel empowered and educated.

Coming from a background where they were totally illiterate, the men say they cannot stress how important education is and the new paths one can walk along if you are knowledgeable.

Many young children these days do not take school seriously and the men advise them to attend school every day and work diligently if they want to see good results.

'A sound education gives you the key to open any door that is closed. It also empowers you and gives you the confidence you need to overcome any obstacle you face," they say.

It is never too late to learn and adult learners John Nkoana, Johan Nkosi and Simon Fuela are living proof of this. Spurring them on is Louise Mawhinney of Colliery Dust Control and Berniece Piveteau of Training Professional. [Photograph scanned from paper edition of The Springs Advertiser]
